Creating libraries in hospitals, Myanmar

Magic Libraries has been funding a project for several years to establish libraries and reading corners in two paediatric hospitals in Yangon, and to support storytelling and reading sessions by young volunteers.

Experiments to promote reading in paediatric hospitals have shown a positive effect on the recovery of patients and their families. It allows children to occupy long waiting hours, forget about pain, communicate better with nurses and doctors about their treatment, continue learning and broaden their horizons while in hospital.

Since 2017 , Magic Libraries and its partner, Myanmar Health and Development Consortium (MHDC) have:

– Equipped two children’s hospitals (Yangon and Yankin Children Hospitals) with library infrastructure.
– Trained 243 volunteers in storytelling and book management.
– Supplied 7’000 children’s books to the two hospitals.
– Organised the loan of 1’100 books a month to patients.
